RUNNING YOUR TRAILER

Having a trailer is an investment whether you use it for personal or for your business. Trailer maintenance is something a trailer owner must do on a regular basis to protect it. You didn’t buy a trailer for no reason; you bought a trailer to help you to carry stuff from one place to another. Others buy trailers for business purposes or for recreational purposes.

If a trailer is not maintained or checked by the owner, we’ll never know when the trailer will eventually break down. To prevent this, trailer owners must know how to maintain and check your trailer.

Let’s go with Tyres and Bearings

  • Always make sure that your tires are inflated and have the right air pressure as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Tires should be properly matched to ensure safety and performance.
  • Use proper bearing adjustment method as stated in your operation and maintenance service manual.
  • Always inspect bearings and service wheels
  • Have your tyres rotated and balanced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Wheel and Axle

Check the wheel fastener torque frequently

When using after-market wheels, make sure that they properly fit and that the wheel studs are long enough to ensure proper thread engagement.
Always remember to support the back of the trailer at the ramps when loading up equipment or vehicles to prevent overloading the axle.
In lifting and supporting your trailer, never use the suspension or axle as a point to lift your trailer.

Other Things to Remember

  • Always check your brakes and make sure that it is properly working
  • Don’t exceed the weight capacity of your trailer. Overloading can seriously degrade components and unsafe braking can lead into trailer failure.
  • Inspect the breakaway device if they are working properly before using the trailer.
  • Proper load distribution should always be checked
  • Remember to use safety tools and protection when servicing your own trailer.
  • Properly lubricate the moving parts in your brake. Lubrication will prevent the brakes from seizing up. Do not allow grease or oil to contaminate the linings, magnet or drum surfaces.
