We often look at second-hand goods and think – why buy new when you can save money? When it comes to trailers, there are some things to consider when buying a second hand one. Here are some of the things you can look for:
Wooden Floorboards
Many trailers are equipped with wooden floorboards. If they are not properly maintained they are susceptible to rot and decay. The last thing you need is your load falling through the floor during your journey.
Aluminum Floors
Unlike wooden floorboards, aluminum floorboards can suffer from rust and deterioration. Don’t forget to check the condition of the cross members under the floor. These provide the integrity of the trailer, so any signs of corrosion are cause for concern.
Tyres
The condition of the tyres is also important when buying a secondhand trailer. Tyres can provide useful information about the trailer. Uneven tyre wear can mean a bent axle which could be a serious problem. Incorrect tyres can also affect the handling of the trailer which can result in accidents when you’re on the road.
Brakes
Braking wiring is another important aspect to check. Hook the trailer up to a towing vehicle to ensure the brakes and the indicators are working properly. Connect the trailer to your own towing vehicle to ensure compatibility between the trailer and the vehicle.
Dents
The external parts of the trailer should be free of serious dents. Some wear and tear is inevitable when on the road, however, you should investigate anything resembling cracks. Look out for any small pinholes and crumbling powder around and outside of the trailer as this is a sign of aluminum corrosion.
Rust and cracks
Rust and cracks are relatively easy to spot but make sure that the hitch mechanism is free of rust and cracks and that it is in good working order.
Remember to always ask about the history of the trailer from the previous owner. Make sure you know what trailer you are looking for and set a realistic budget.
